I was deeply saddend to learn of the passing of
Barbara. I worked with her in my first professional
(Equity) job in the late Ron Milner's play, WHO'S GOT
HIS OWN, in 1966 at the American Place Theater. It was
directed by the late, great director/teacher, Lloyd
Richards. I believe Glenn Turman and myself are the only
actors still living from the production. My condolences
to her family.

I was just recently introduced to Dr. Teer's life
and work recently at a symposium at Georgetown

deeply and I couldn't stop talking about her eventhough
she sat on a panel alongside such luminaries as Amiri

Barbara was truly an Angel on earth. I woked closely
with her at the Natinal Black Theater and she impacted

Dear Sisters and Brothers You have my heart felt
sorrow in the loss of Dr. Barbara Ann Teer. She is a
giant and mentor in the African, African American Arts
Community. Her presence will be missed but her spirit
will for ever be present in the realm of the ancestors.
I was one of her first students in 1968 in Harlem. I
still remember my experience in the NBTC. It and she

and a activist. Please know many people over the
Diaspora share in the celebration of her life.

Among many things I remember about Barbara is
braiding her hair on a regular basis on summer. It was
back the day, early 70's when cornrows were coming into
fashion. Barbara would come to my house, a Brownstone my
husband, Ernest and I were renovating on 118th Street.
She'd sit on the floor, we'd discuss a hairstyle design
and then, while I braided, we'd have in depth
conversations about any and everything including: Black
Theatre, of course - I was part of the New Lafayette
Theatre; Harlem, I urged her to by Harlem property and
we both envisioned the Harlem of today; family, children
- we both have daughters about the same age and with the
same name - Barbara's - Shade; mine - Shadae. We
cemented a friendship that lasted through the years.
Barbara was a frequent presenter for the AUDELCO Awards
when I was the producer. She was the first guest in a
series of conversations with Black Theatre originals

'Dr. Barbara Ann Teer was a great lady of the
theater and most of all, our Village of Harlem. Indeed,
she was the first lady of theater in Harlem. Her vision
and tireless dedication to the preservation and growth
of black culture helped make Harlem internationally
known as the black arts capital of the world. Barbara
was committed and loyal and when she was in your corner,
there was no fiercer warrior. I was proud to call her
friend. She was a loyal supporter and remained strong in
the face of adversity. She leaves a legacy of love for
her family, friends, her community and for black artists
to strive to dream and create everywhere. Never give up.
Dr. Teer never did and I am going to work to make sure
that her landmark legacy, the National Black Theater,
lives on as she envisioned as a home to nurture and
showcase the magnificent culture of the Black Diaspora.'

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend services. I
no longer live in New York and it would be difficult for
me to get there at this time. Barbara and workshops she
created have been on my mind recently. I thought that I
would get the opportunity to tell her in person how
different my life has become as a result of taking those
workshops many years ago. They just turned my life in a
completely different direction and I was exposed to
people and opportunities that I would have never been
exposed to otherwise. I so appreciate her presence on

Dr.Terr was director of my first Equity production
'The Believers.' Through her encouragement I also became
a founding member of The National Black Theatre. After
thirty years as a television actress, I very recently
returned to the stage in a play currently running at the
Horizon Theatre in Atlanta, GA. Though only in touch
with her personally a few times since our initial
association, Barbara 'came to me' like the power house
she will no doubt always be sometime this weekend as I
was driving to work. Her presence in my life and mind
was so riveting in that moment I thought out loud of
giving her a call, but did not. Imbued with her
progressive spirit to always live my life without
regret, I am taking her 'visitation' as a reminder to
always trust my instincts and that her will to protect
and guide all her 'children' remains as stong today as
it was when under her wing. Of the countless lessons and
insights learned at her knee, this is clearly one worthy
of refresh! ing. I am eternally grateful for the

Dr. Teer did me the honor of attending one of my
plays, a few years back. She sat in the front row with
one of her children. She even shook my hand afterwards
and gave me more than kind words. The thing I remember
most about that moment, was her face and the look she
gave me. I don't know how else to explain it, except to
say that there are times in a 'younger' person's life,
when an elder will look at you in a certain way - a
certain lift at the corner's of the mouth; a clear,
definite, smiling thing in their eyes - that alerts you
to the fact that there is something POSSIBLE for your
life. It was a good feeling. A good moment. I realize
today how precious it was. Thank you, Dr. Teer, for the
moment, and for all the possibilities that came with it.

I remember back in the 1970's learning a poem from a
workshop I took there at NBT that tonight upon hearing
of Barbara's passing seems so profound. Nothing can
happen to me... without first passing through me...
without first passing through my mind... The
words has strengthen me over the years and help me find
me own strength. Barbara was a wise and strong women
who could see the further and make it happen. The good
lord has called her home with welcoming arms. He has
looked at her work and said well done. Tude is there
also to welcome her they are together again producing
plays for the pleasure of the lord. To the family of
Barbara find comfort in knowing her spirit lives on in
all those that she has touched. Janice Darien

I am shocked, saddened, and distressed to hear of
this passage . . . Dr. Barbara Ann Teer was a powerful
and consistent presence in our lives--reminding us of
the need to rise above our limitations--real and
imagined--and to achieve our true potential as African
people of spiritual power and universal love. I will
always be grateful to Dr. Teer for her enthusiastic
support of my story, 'Testify!' which she--and our
beloved Tunde Samuel--produced at NBT. Now, she also

Barbara Ann Teer did not need any explanation as to
why I addressed her as the ' Lionness ' when in the
early 80s she proposed to bring African sculptors from
western Nigeria to help build her theater in the heart
of Harlem, black America's cultural capital.'Say
What?'... She was a fierce promoter and protector of
African American cultural treasures- the wonderful
achievements in the dramatic arts that she wished to
share with Africa, the Diaspora,America and the world.
Barbara had an audacious vision, rooted in family and
community and without limitation. She had a fearless
courage and decisiveness that was inspiring. If you had
the opportunity to speak with her, you know what I'm
talking about.Who could have predicted that this thickly
maned vivacious and beautiful woman from the hinterlands
(East ST. Louis) could come to New York, the big bad
Apple, and conquer? I believe we needed more time to
enjoy her reign.A gifted rare presence has left us. But
one only has to stand at 5th Ave and 125 St. and feel it

Since my teenage years Dr. Teer has held firm in my
mind as a fondest memory. I was girl who came every
weekend for years to NBT, taking the long ride from St.
Albans, Queens. Like many, I came in search of life and
in search of self. Like many, I thought I would be an
actor. And though the performing arts remain my first
love, I learned a truer identity there, simply by
sitting in the risers. I learned what great joy attended
my blackness, what royalty, what serenity, what power. I
learned the raucous energy of the soul celebration! One
day many years later I watched her descend the stairs in
the great hall at her home. In my life, I will never see
an angel so at home in human flesh. Dr. Teer, from the
other side you now you know - in ways I can never
express - how very much your living meant to me. I have
the fire of a 14 year old and the wisdom of ancients
just thinking of you. With all my heart, Naomi Davis

Dr. Barbara Ann Teer was a visionary inspiration to
all us, particularly African-American women who lacked
positive role models of successful Black woman
entrepreneurs in the arts. Dr. Teer took this
accomplishment many steps forward not only as a
performing artist but by building a thriving theater
institution that developed and sustained Black heritage
and culture. Dr. Teer was a shining star and example. I
will miss her dearly. Joan Allen

May the truth that is ours continue to flow across

My deepest condolences to the Teer family. As a
proud 'child' of the Black Arts Movement in Harlem of
the 1970s, Barbara Ann Teer was one of the big
influences on my artistic life and vision. As a founding
member of Ernie McClintock's 127th Street Repertory
Theatre, The National Black Theatre and her philosophy
of the actor as Liberator informs my artistic pedagogy
that I share with students and young actors I train in
educational theatre. My heart is heavy over such a
tremendous loss! Gwendolen Hardwick Associate Artistic
Director Creative Arts Team-City University of New York

Praises to the work that Dr. Teer did upon this
planet. Her work required fortitude, commiment, and love
(which she must have had in abundance). The world is a
better place for having shared space and time with the
vision and presence of Dr. Teer. Joan Burroughs

My sincere condolences to the immediate family &
to the enormous extended family. Dr. Barbara Ann Teer
was truly a Great Fearless Giant,
Extra-Extra-Extra-ordinary Visionary, Pioneer, Artist to
say the least! I will always have a song in my heart
& personally honor her as one of my Great Queen
Mothers whose great works & workshops has directly
impacted my life, molded & strengthened my
character, provided me the platform to be an
entrepreneur, identify, claim & augment my own
divine artistry, and truly gave purpose to my life! Dr.
Teer's Technology of Soul taught many of us to rise like
the phoenix from the ashes of pain, shame, blame and to
FLY HIGHER than the EAGLE! So I pray that the great
Light that she has implanted in so many thousands of us,
gives us all the committed strength, faith, courage
& inspiration to fulfill our duty to continue to
support her awesome legacy & vision, and pool our
resources to continually fund the legacy of the
Institution of Action Arts- The National Black Theater.
