A Special Screening of "Reclaim the Flag"

05.01

2:00PM

NYTW | 79 E. 4th Street

Join National Black Theatre and New York Theatre Workshop May 1st or “MAYDAY” for a powerful afternoon featuring a live performance by the Resistance Revival Chorus and a screening of Reclaim the Flag. Directed by Alexis Bittar and Bruce Cohen, this 2025 documentary short brings together 50 LGBTQ+ leaders to reimagine the American flag as a symbol of inclusion, unity, and shared belonging—reclaiming it from political division and restoring it as a symbol for all Americans.

This powerful documentary explores what the American flag means today and how we might reclaim it. Featuring legendary activists Bill T. Jones and Raquel Willis, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Symone, trailblazing creator Lena Waithe, and community leaders like former Ford Foundation President Darren Walker, the film weaves together voices from across art, activism, and culture to ask: Who does the flag belong to and who gets to define it?

Afterwards, NBT’s Executive Artistic Director Jonathan McCrory will join a panel with director Bruce Cohen, activist Daniel Basila, and curator and initiator of Fall of Freedom, Laura Raicovich. Moderated by Patricia McGregor, the panel will lead a post-film conversation as we reflect on how symbols, stories, and movements can unite or divide us and how we might reclaim them together.

Fall of Freedom is an urgent call to the arts community to unite in defiance of authoritarian forces sweeping the nation. Beginning May 1, 2026, galleries, museums, libraries, comedy clubs, theaters, and concert halls across the country will host exhibitions, performances, and public events that channel the urgency of this moment. Fall of Freedom is an open invitation to artists, creators, and communities to take part—and to celebrate the experiences, cultures, and identities that shape the fabric of our nation.
