On June 16, National Black Theatre and The Apollo will host a special free Juneteenth screening of the NBT & ALL ARTS original documentary The Gathering: A Journey to Grace co-directed by NBT’s Executive Artistic Director, Jonathan McCrory and Thomas Wirthensohn, followed by a short talkback.
The documentary premiered on PBS on June 18th, 2025 and this will be the first screening of the work in a theatre. The film tracks the journey, development, impact and creation of The Gathering: A Collective Sonic Ringshout which world premiered in 2022 at The Apollo to a sold-out house on its historic stage and was then mounted through a dynamic partnership forged through The Kennedy Center’s Conflux Partnership in 2024 in the Opera House.
Through live capture, interviews and archival footage audiences will witness how National Black Theatre partnered with The Kennedy Center, The Apollo, American Composers Orchestra, NEWorks Voices of Inspiration and more to bring together over 3,000 artists and community members over the course of the whole project for a groundbreaking, genre-defying festival of work culminating with the concert experience. The film offers an exclusive behind the scenes look at the making of this cultural event featuring extraordinary artists, including Nona Hendryx, Toshi Reagon, Carlos Simon, Mahogany L. Browne, Abby Dobson, Courtney Bryan, Troy Anthony, and Joel Thompson.
Join us to experience what has been called a “reclamation of Black culture, Black ideas, Black ancestry—but also a Black future,” filmed in the heart of our nation’s capital at the John F. Kennedy Center, the nation’s national theatre.
