A lovesick songwriter arrives in New York City with a notebook of love songs and a bad habit of choosing men who make him feel small. But when a game night forces him into the same room with his situationship and his gym crush, he must confront the unsettling truth that he might be bringing the poison to the party himself.
This show is commissioned and developed through NBT’s I Am SOUL Playwright residency program.
jeremy o'brian
Playwright
jeremy o’brian is an award-winning playwright and songwriter from Lambert, Mississippi based in New York City. A playwright-in-residence with The National Black Theatre and Associate Writer with the Tectonic Theater Project, o’brian holds a BA in English from Tougaloo College and an MA in African and African Diaspora Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. His playwriting awards include the National Black Theatre I Am Soul Playwriting Award (2023), New York Stage and Film Founders’ Award (2021), and Lambda Literary Emerging LGBTQ Voice in Playwriting Fellowship (2016). He made his Main Stage debut directing Kate Hamill’s Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson – Apt. 2B at LSU’s Shaver Theatre.
Sideeq Heard
Director
Sideeq Heard is a director, actor and rapper. He was the Associate Director of the Tony Nominated Broadway production of Fat Ham. He won “Best Director” at the Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Oscar qualifying film festival for “Here is a Man: The Donny Hathaway Story” Recent directing credits include: Primary Trust at Cleveland Playhouse. Fat Ham at the Royal Shakespeare Company (UK), Dingaling at The New Group (workshop), Fat Ham at The Old Globe, Fat Ham at The Geffen Playhouse, Hamlet, Rhyme Deferred, The Waiting Room a devised piece in partnership with Artreach Inc. at The Eugene O’Neil Center, A Curious Thing and Word Becomes Flesh. Former Associate Artistic Director of JAG Productions. He is artistic coordinator for the Downtown Urban Arts Festival. He was the Associate Director on The Classical Theatre of Harlem’s award-winning adaptation of Twelfth Night. Sideeq is the creator, director and co-writer of PUNKS!, a digital series that follows the lives of three queer black men on their journey to self-actualization.
