Amani Meliyah

SOUL Directing Residency

amani meliyah is a Brooklyn based director originally from South Carolina’s gullah geechee corridor. She proudly comes from a long lineage of funeral directors. They honor this ancestry through their artistic practice based in analyzing the spiritual nature of Grief through explorations of dreams, the subconscious, and the Spirit realm in effort to evoke transformative healing within themself and witnesses of the work.

As a generative artist, they are most excited by new play development in collaboration with black, femme, and queer artists who are investigating the interconnections of Liberation work, Spirit, and community. Their recent directing credits include Ghetto Alchemy: A Lunchroom Survival Guide by Maleek Rae, and self written and directed short film ROOFTOP JESUS. amani is an active Theatre of the Oppressed practitioner with TONYC and an alumni of the Roundabout Directors Group. amani is proud to call National Black Theatre her creative home.
